What is a Lateral Movement?

Lateral movement is the mechanism used for a Club moving from one division to another at the same Step Level.

Clubs can seek a lateral movement if they believe that they would be better placed in a different division, however, the question of 'how would this affect other Clubs' must be considered.

The FA also has the ability to laterally move Clubs based on the pool of Clubs available to them at a given Step, in any given season.

Any lateral movement decisions are made on completion of a season, when all promotion and relegation placements are satisfied.
